In 2-1/2 weeks, the Virginia Hound Heritage will again demonstrate why it’s a relevant organization. For those of you who do not hunt, the non-profit strives to preserve both the heritage and history of hunting that uses hounds in a positive way. But this is not just a club of people devoted solely to hunting, but to also helping its community.

Notably, on Sunday, Oct. 7 — mark your calendar — that’s when the VHH will donate a walk-in, portable meat cooler to an equally important group, the Hunters for the Hungry. This statewide agency works to getting venison to people in need. The website notes this year’s goal is to collect and distribute 325,000 pounds of the food.

That contribution will be made during the third annual Hose and Hounds event, which helps local community projects. An earlier example of the Hose and Hounds fundraiser was to buy bulletproof vests for K-9 units in both the Southampton and Sussex sheriff’s offices. This time, volunteer fire department will benefit.
