TAMPA, Fla. — Laura Jones Campbell departed this life on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018. in Tampa, Florida.

She was born in Franklin, Virginia, on Oct. 12, 1931, to the late Ryland Jones and Rosa Bunn Jones.

Laura attended Hayden High School in Franklin.

She married Richard D. Campbell on July 24, 1950. He became an AME Zion minister and they lived in many cities throughout the country, from Worcester, Massachusetts to Chicago, Illinois.

Logan Temple A.M.E Zion became her final church home in San Diego.

Laura cared for her husband during his illness while being an active member of the church and the community. Laura was a deaconess at the church. She faithfully prepared communion, set up the altar and attended Bible studies. She also accompanied the pastor to visit the sick and shut-in to serve communion. She would read the Bible and bring music on a cassette player to worship.

She became a delegate to the annual conference and continued her service as a lifetime missionary member. She was the Sunshine Chair on the district level. This involved sending cards to members who had lost loved ones and collecting donations for those in need. She was appointed by the bishop of her conference to represent the A.M.E Zion Church in the San Diego District of Church Women United. There she was the chair for the World Community Day. Laura was also the district coordinator for the Young Adult Missionary Society.

Laura always thought of others first when giving her time and resources. She drove friends to church, doctor appointments, grocery stores and anywhere a ride was needed. In the community, Laura was the exercise lead chair in her complex. She loved music and participated in the singing group at the senior center. Laura loved others and always greeted everyone with a smile. Her love, compassion and kindness were most warmly expressed to her family, which she felt was her greatest accomplishment. She loved her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Richard D. Campbell; and her eldest daughter, Monica Lopes, JD.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Donel Jr., Mark Theodore, Jeffrey Lenore, Hugh Scott; her daughter, Jacqueline Ramsay; sons-in-law, Kenneth Lopes and Ludlow Ramsay; daughters-in-law, Barbara Campbell and Jocelyn Campbell; brother-in-law, William Corbitt and wife, Linda. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The celebration of life service will be at noon on Saturday, Sept. 8, in O’berry A.M.E. Zion Church, Franklin, The wake will be on Friday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, Franklin. She will laid to rest in the Southview Cemetery, Franklin.
