Regional jail superintendent named to Criminal Justice Services Board

RICHMOND
Gov. Ralph Northam announced on Friday that Col. William C. Smith of Windsor, who serves as superintendent of the Western Tidewater Regional Jail, had been named to his administration’s Criminal Justice Services Board.

According to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services’ website, the 29-member board is the DCJS’s approving authority for the regulations the department promulgates in accord with the Administrative Process Act and approves most of the grants the department awards to localities, statte agencies and private nonprofit organizations. It has representation from all aspects of the criminal justice system on both state and local levels of government, as well as representatives of the private security agency, the public at large and the General Assembly.

“I am very honored that Governor Northam and his administration appointed me to serve on the Criminal Justice Services Board,” Smith said. “I am looking forward to working with the other board members to ensure the safety of the citizens of Virginia.”

The Western Tidewater Regional Jail, located in Suffolk, serves Isle of Wight County and the cities of Franklin and Suffolk.
