fatal accident on Southampton ParkwayA two-vehicle accident on Southampton Parkway (U.S. Route 58) on Monday has resulted in a fatality.

According to Lt. Camden Cobb, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at 1:36 p.m. in the 28000 block of the highway in front of the 7-Eleven.

The accident occurred when a Ford Focus pulled out of the 7-Eleven parking lot and came to a stop in a lane of travel on the eastbound side of the highway. A Dodge pickup truck struck the Focus on the driver’s side.

The driver of the Ford Focus was pronounced dead at the scene. The front seat passenger of the Focus was transported to Southampton Memorial Hospital for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver and two passengers in the pickup truck did not receive treatment for any injuries.

The Virginia Department of Transportation was on-scene assisting with traffic control. One eastbound lane of Route 58 and the median were closed for approximately two hours. All lanes have since reopened.

There was light rain at the time of the accident but it is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. No summonses were issued as a result of the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the deceased until proper notifications can be made.
