An armed Franklin man allegedly barricaded himself and his mother inside of an apartment on Cameron Street early Monday morning.
According to Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department, officers responded to the 600 block of Cameron Street at 2:35 a.m. in response to reports of gunfire. While checking the area, they encountered a black male standing in front of 624 Cameron Street holding a rifle. When the suspect saw the officers, he reportedly ran into the apartment.
Officers evacuated the adjoining apartments and established a perimeter. One gun shot was heard from inside the apartment while the officers were awaiting additional units. Officers gave the suspect directions over a loud speaker numerous times to put his weapon down and resolve the situation peacefully, however he refused to do so.
At 4:32 a.m. the suspect came out of the apartment and was taken into custody. Neither he nor his mother, who was also in the apartment, were injured. A search of the apartment led to the recovery of a stolen scoped .223 caliber rifle, ammunition and narcotics.
The arrested suspect has been identified as Travis Demonte Evans, 29, of 624 Cameron Street. He has been charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics, possession of a schedule I or II drug, discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm in public. Evans was remanded to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.
