kenneth layton griffithKenneth Layton Griffith, 87, went to be with the Lord on July 20, 2018 in Shelby, North Carolina. He was born on May 2, 1931 to Milton P. and Edna P. Griffith who preceded him in death. He was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps. After 35 years of faithful service in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Ken retired as a Chief Quartermaster from federal service. He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, Portsmouth #100 Masonic Lodge, Khedive Shrine Temple and the Portsmouth Moose Lodge #898.

Kenneth will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 26 years, Dorothy Avent Griffith, of Shelby, North Carolina, previously of Courtland, and was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, M. Ruth Griffith. He is also survived by four daughters, Mary G. Rivers (Phillip) of Bassett, Karan R. Cofer (Richard) of Portsmouth, Anita M. Griffith of Norfolk, and Dee P. Greene (Kevin) of Lawndale, North Carolina; a sister, Mildred G. Woods (Homer J.) of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. His twin brothers, Howard and Harold Griffith, also preceded Kenneth in death.

Ken especially loved his family and extended family. He reminisced often about doing aerobics with his niece, watching his grandchildren and nephew play sports, and having wonderful meals with his mother-in-law as well as loving to eat out. Ken loved and helped care for Dot’s father, Arthur, and loved to listen to Arthur talk about his life on the farm and other experiences in his life.

Visitation was held on Monday, July 23 at 10 a.m. with a funeral service immediately following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Potter officiated at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum,  4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, with Military Honors and Masonic Rites. A burial followed in the cemetery.
