Whether you need a lot of fresh produce for a roadside stand or restaurant, or perhaps even just for personal canning or freezing, the Courtland Farmers Market opens its new auction season on June 7. The weekly sale begins at 6:30 p.m. each Thursday in the Southeast Virginia Farmers Market. Oct. 11 will be the last auction date.

Sold in season will be apples, berries, butter beans, broccoli, cabbages, cantaloupes, cucumbers, greens, snaps, mums, ornamental and sweet corn, plants, spring plants, tomatoes, watermelons and yellow squash.

A few tips for buyers:

You must have a legitimate tax number in order to be tax-exempt or pay sales tax.

• You must get a number before bidding. Regular buyers can get a permanent number.

• All items are sold “as is, where is,” and sales are final.

• Buyers must pay by cash or check before leaving unless arrangements are made otherwise

For sellers:

• Anyone who grows produce, whether a commercial grower or just a large garden with surplus vegetables, is welcome to sell.

• A 12 percent commission is deducted rom all sales. Auction starts promptly at 6:30 p.m., so arrive no later than 5:30 p.m.

• Unloading of produce is the seller’s responsibility.

• Sellers may not bid on their own produce

If the sight of all the produce makes you hungry, then stick around for a meal. The Boykins Volunteer Fire Department and Broken Arrow Farms will alternately sell hot food.
