Lady Indians begin regional play today

The Lady Indians finished regular season play with four wins beginning with a double header against Brunswick, 17-0 and 11-0. In the first game, Mady Wood pitched a shut-out, no hitter with seven strike-outs. Jordyn Greene and Diamond Jones both hit out of the park home runs. Greene went 4 for 4 with six RBIs, and Jones went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Sam Stephenson was the winning pitcher for the second shutout of the day. Rachel McNeil went 2 for 2, and Greene, Jones and Maddie Simmons all went 2 for 3.

The following week the Indians went on to defeat Surry 15-3 with the combined efforts of Wood and Stephenson. Wood started, giving up no runs, no hits and striking out seven in three innings. McNeil went 2 for 2. Simmons and Hilary Newlon both went 2 for 3.

In the final game of the regular season, the Indians defeated Greensville 10-2. Wood got the win in the circle, striking out 11. Jones, Greene and Wood all went 3 for 4. The Indians finished on top of the Tri-Rivers District with a record of 14-0 going into the district tournament.

On May 15, the Lady Indians faced the Lady Eagles from Greensville, who finished fourth in the district. The Indians defeated the Eagles 10-0 in six innings. Wood was the winning pitcher, striking out 7 with 0 walks. Jones went 4 for 4. Wood went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Carawan Harris went 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs.

The championship game was played on Tuesday due to weather delays against the 3rd-seed Park View Lady Dragons, who defeated the second-place Windsor Dukes, to reach the championship game. The Lady Indians finished with the 4-1 win for the Tri Rivers District Tournament Championship.

Wood had the win with five strike-outs and giving up one unearned run. Park View got the early lead in the top of the second with a leadoff walk. and followed by a single to right that resulted in a run scoring on an Indian error.

The Indians answered in the bottom of the third with a leadoff walk by Taylor Cross followed by a single by Jones bringing Hilary Newlon to the plate with runners on first and second with one out. Newlon singled to score Cross evening the score. The Indians would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jones got the offense started with a single and Greene hit an out of the park homer scoring 2. The Indians scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double by Mady Wood and a single, RBI by Harris.

The Indian’s defense was able to hold the Dragons bats and not allow any additional runs to be scored.

The Indians will begin regional play today, May 25, against the winner of Park View and York. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
