ISLE OF WIGHT
Come the general election in November, residents of the Carrsville District in Isle of Wight County will need to travel to a new location to cast their ballots. On Thursday evening, the county’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to move the district’s polling site, which had been located in the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department, to the Carrsville Community Center.
The change in venue comes as the result of a request by the Carrsville Ruritan Club and the Carrsville Community Center Board of Directors. In a letter dated April 23, Carrsville Ruritan Club President Timothy Rife explained that the use of the VFD as a polling location has presented problems during past elections with inadequate parking and heavy traffic during peak voting hours. He said there had been several complaints by voters to precinct workers, and also drew attention to the possibility that emergency vehicles would not be able to easily get in and out of the station on an Election Day.
“The Carrsville Community Center, built by the Carrsville Ruritans, can alleviate these problems,” he said. “It has an abundance of parking, more room inside for the voters and is more centrally located to the Carrsville Community.”
The Carrsville Community Center is located on Carrsville Highway across the street from Carrsville Elementary School. The Carrsville VFD is also located on Carrsville Highway, but on the other side of the Carrsville Community Memorial Bridge.
The change in location will not take effect until August, so voters in the special election for sheriff in July will still need to vote at the VFD.
