On Saturday, June 9, Cover 3 Foundation will have its inaugural Walk for Childhood Hunger event from 9 a.m. to noon. Located in Franklin, Cover 3 Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that participates in the Child and Adult Care Food Program and the Summer Food Service Program, which are both federal programs that ensure children will receive free healthy meals and snacks. The mission of C3F is to fight childhood hunger by providing meals through after-school and summer programs. In general, C3F accepts monetary and food donations, which are tax-deductible.

After his professional football career, C3F founder Greg Scott started the initiative while organizing a youth football camp. He found out that many of the young men who came to the football camp only ate during school, leaving them hungry for the majority of the day. Scott learned about programs that fed children after school, and he decided to help out by starting C3F.

“It started out with three schools in 2010.” said Scott, “If you fast forward to today, we have served 2.5 million meals and snacks to children in 77 after school programs.”

He also wanted to do something which the entire community could participate in fighting childhood hunger while promoting health and fitness. That’s why Scott decided to sponsor the Walk for Childhood Hunger. The outcome that he desires is for people to learn more about childhood hunger and how close it hits to home.

“I hope that people will leave the event knowing that childhood hunger is real, and that it effects our community,” Scott said.

The event is a two-mile walk that will start at 125 S. College Drive and end at the Clay Street park. Refreshments will be served. The cost for registration is $20, and you can go to eventbrite.com to register. Each registered participant will receive a T-shirt at the event. Prospective sponsors can have a spot on the T-shirt for $100, and the their logos must be emailed to greg@cover3foundation.org. Proceeds will go to Cover 3 Foundation.
