PLYMOUTH, N.C.
De’Zyre Williams, a native of Franklin, knows what it’s like to be the new kid on the block. Now living in Plymouth, North Carolina, she found a way to express the importance of friends and making new ones.

“Close Friends” tells of her own experience of being a new face in a new school, but then finding and making new friends.

“Close Friends” was written by De’Zyre Williams and illustrated by an artist who goes by the name of Junica. — Submitted | Joyetta Murphy

Her mother, Joyetta Murphy, said her daughter had wanted to write about the time they had to move from Lewiston, North Carolina.

“She just wanted to share her story with other children,” said Murphy.

But instead of people, the girl chose animals for her story. There’s Pig and Mouse, who attend West Farm Elementary School.

There is where they meet Zebra, the new student, who later bonds with the two classmates.

With this publication under her belt, thanks to publishers Mascot Books, this will be the first of three stories that the young author plans. She’s reportedly already on her second story.

The illustrations were done by an in-house artist, who goes by the name of Junica, which the girl had picked as the best to portray her story.
