The Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department is in the process of expanding the footprint of its firehouse thanks to a generous donation from a former town resident. According to Clayton Gaskins, president of the Newsoms VFD, the addition to the firehouse will be approximately 75 feet by 30 feet and will include a meeting room, living quarters, a day room, a large kitchen and office space. Construction began in October 2017 and is anticipated to be complete by mid-summer.

The donation comes from Hugh C. Vincent of Murfreesboro, North Carolina. This was made in memory of his parents, Hugh and Lillian Vincent, who were heavily involved in the Newsoms community.

The architect handling the project is Martin and Martin of Chesapeake and the general contractor is Dean Vincent, the donor’s son. The Newsoms VFD is planning to hold a dedication ceremony once construction is complete, but a specific date and time have not yet been finalized.
