Southampton County will be one of three sites this coming week for people to participate in the U.S. 58 Arterial Management Study. This will be presented by the Virginia Department of Transportation as a way to get feedback on how to the agency can “preserve and enhance” the 70-plus miles of the corridor.

“We want to extend the life of the road rather than widening or building a new one,” said Nina Napolitano, a VDOT communications representative.

As an example of a non-intrusive improvement, Napolitano said VDOT could look at changing the dynamics of an intersection and how traffic moves through it. Perhaps signal delays could instead help a situation there.

She added that the agency does not have any specific plans of its own.

  • The first meeting will be at Pioneer Elementary School, corner of 58 and Pioneer Road in Suffolk on Monday, March 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • The second meeting will be at the Southampton County Civic Center, 26022 Administration Center Drive in Courtland, from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • The third meeting will be at the Greensville County Government Center, 1781 Greensville County Circle, Emporia, from 5 to 7 p.m.

There will be a formal presentation as well as an open house format at each meeting

People may provide oral and written comments at the hearing or submit them by Monday, March 26, to Jerry Pauley, VDOT Project Manager, 1700 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434, or via email to Jerry.Pauley@VDOT.Virginia.gov.
