To the Editor:

The horrific act on social media, threatening our local high school, brought much panic, confusion and alarming thoughts to many individuals. The original post of the threat spread rapidly among many social networking sites and, yes, it is important that everyone is informed of situations like this, but our society is so eager to post and comment on all social media that real communication is lost.

We say things online we wouldn’t normally say to people if we were interacting face-to-face, and communication can get fuzzy or misinterpreted when reading something online.

We are so quick to share and post important information on Facebook, but would we share the same important information with the cashier ringing us up at the store?

If our society focused more on social interaction in real life maybe situations like this wouldn’t happen, because in today’s world it’s easy to hide behind a phone or computer screen, but so hard to speak to someone face-to-face.

Our problem is that we are so connected with social media, and how we are perceived online, but very disconnected with real personal relationships.
