Joseph Kelley Vaughan Sr.

FRANKLIN — Joseph Kelley Vaughan Sr., 78, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, in a Newport News hospital.
Kelley was a native of Capron, Virginia, and was a son of the late Rowland Bryan Vaughan Sr. and Lee Kelley Vaughan.
He was a 1957 graduate of Southampton High School, a 1961 graduate of Emory and Henry College, and received a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975.
He was a member of the Beta Lambda Zeta fraternity, and a member of the Certified Security Officers and Private Investigators.
He was a Hearings Officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections, a former professor at Southside Virginia Community College, a former teacher in the Greensville County Public Schools and a former member of the Greensville County School Board.
Kelley was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Fountain Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Thorpe Vaughan; three sons, Joseph Kelley Vaughan Jr., MD, Bryan Thorpe Vaughan (Theresa) and Terrell Andrew Vaughan (Ymelda;) two sisters, Katherine V. McWaters (Cliff) and Melodie V. Beghtol; four brothers, Rowland Bryan Vaughan Jr. (Jean,) Reginald Thomas Vaughan Sr. (Myrtis,) Darden Wrenn Vaughan (Virginia) and Jack Hart Vaughan (John); 10 grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mary Baker.
The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, in the Capron Cemetery with the Rev. James Wilkes officiating.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Kelley to your local Alzheimer’s Association.
