NEWSOMS — Rufus Edwards “R.E.” Drake Jr., 93, went home to his Lord on Jan. 23, 2018, surrounded by his family at his residence.

He was the son of the late Rufus E. and Edna Hartman Drake of Newsoms, and was also predeceased by son-in-law, Lewis Edmonds Jr.; daughter-in-law, Linda J. Drake; grandson, Stephen J. Drake; and great-granddaughter, Abbigail Drake.

R.E. was born and raised on the family farm outside of Newsoms where he spent his life working and supervising until recently. He served in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific during World War II (1944-1945.)

He was a member and trustee of Barnes United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion and the Newsoms Ruritan Club, and served for many years on the Farm Bureau Board.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 71 years, Hilda Brett Drake; daughter, Dorothy Rae Drake; and sons, Rodger R. Drake, William E. Drake and Joseph H. Drake (Linda T.)

“Dadaddy” is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Gail Gagner (Chris) and children, Heath, Kevin and Jordan; Cheryl Turner and children, Colby and Shelby; Justin Drake (Casey) and son, Carson; Lewis Edmonds III (Kristin) and children, Jackson and Andrew; and Susie Edmonds (Bobby).

The graveside service took place at Hollywood Cemetery in Newsoms on Friday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Mary Alice Colwell and the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiated. The family received visitors in the family home at 32561 Cypress Swamp Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Barnes United Methodist Church General Fund, c/o Cheryl Turner, Church Treasurer, 33080 Cypress Swamp Road, Newsoms, VA 23874.
