FRANKLIN
The Broncos lost two games but won another in the quarterfinals of the Tri-Rivers District Tournament on Saturday. That day, the boys basketball team defeated Sussex 67-55, but lost on Monday to Park View High School in South Hill, 64-51. That loss puts the team out of district play.

Coach Robby Cutchins said, “We will move back to our 1A level, and will go into regionals, which start on Friday.”

Because his team is No. 2 seed, that gives the boys a bye, so they won’t be playing until Tuesday, Feb. 20, and that will be against the winner of Washinton and Lee versus Colonial Heights.

Cutchins recalled a few stats from the Monday game:

• Drelyn Frd had 10 points; 18 rebounds and six blocks;

• Deuntae Jefferson had 15 points and seven rebounds; and

• Nyjey Pope had 14 point.

The Broncos’ record is now 17-7 for the season and they are ranked No. 8 in the state.

Franklin High School’s girls basketball team lost to Surry. However, they will still play in the Region 1A Tournament on Friday, Feb. 16. As of Sunday, the official brackets had not been released but, according to FHS Principal Travis Felts, it looked like the Lady Broncos would be traveling to West Point.
