Durwood B. Toppin

EDENTON, N.C. — Durwood “Bud” Bunch Toppin, 75, of 2454 Virginia Road, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, North Carolina.

Mr. Toppin was born in Chowan County on Feb. 16, 1942, and was the son of the late Nolan Bunch and Jennie Parker Toppin.

After graduation from Chowan High School, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years, and later retired from a career with Union Camp Corp. in Franklin, Virginia.

A member and deacon of Center Hill Baptist Church where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee and sang in the Adult Choir, he also enjoyed membership in the Edward G. Bond Post No. 40 of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Lillie Mae Beaman and Hazel Spruill, and by brothers, Maurice, Troy, Guy, Wilford and Garland Toppin.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 51 years, Doris Roberson Toppin; his daughter, Jennifer Youmans and husband, Pat, of Gunnison, Colorado; his son, Army Sgt. Major Timothy Toppin and wife, Jessica, of Fort Drum, New York; a sister, Shirley Kirby of Tyner; three brothers, Earl Toppin of Wilmington, Haurice Toppin of Tyner and Larry Toppin of Crystal Springs, Mississippi; and six grandchildren, Brittney and Vince Youmans, and Diane, James, Sarah and Ashley Toppin.

The funeral will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, and will be conducted by the Rev. Russell Blanchard and the Rev. Don English. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.

Friends may join the family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at the residence.
