The host Broncos repeatedly proved their strength over the ARGS Dragons by winning 85 to 25 in the Peggy Wilkins Gymnasium at Franklin High School on Wednesday night.

FHS got its first point via a free throw within 20 seconds from the start, and soon accumulated more baskets. The team kept the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School scoreless for nearly four minutes into the first quarter.

The Dragons got their first basket at 4:02 left, with the second point at 1:52 remaining, by which time the score was 18-4.

ARGS got to its sixth point about 20 seconds into the second quarter. FHS continued to climb all the while preventing their opponents from making much more progress. With eight seconds left, the Broncos scored their 38th point to the Dragons’ 15.

Returning from halftime, FHS collected more and more baskets, all the while increasing their lead in spite of ARGS’s valiant efforts. Broncos got to 60, 62 and 64 within two minutes before the end of the third quarter. The Dragons were only up to 19 by then.

The last quarter was more of the same for FHS. The visitors didn’t get another point until nearly halfway through, by which time the Broncos were at 76-22.

With 1:40 left, ARGS made it to 25 points, but got no further. FHS scored another four points within two minutes, the last at 17 seconds remaining.

“I’m very proud of the team,” FHS head basketball coach Robby Cutchins said afterward. “The boys put in a lot of work. They had chemistry and were gelling.”

Concerning the upcoming game against rivals Southampton, the coach added, “As I’ve said before, ‘Expect the unexpected.’ We will look to do better on Friday.”

That game, however, has since been postponed to Saturday, Feb. 3, beginning with JV play at 3 p.m.
