COURTLAND
Whenever and wherever there’s snow and vehicles, somehow the powder and ice seem to claim a share of drivers, causing them to slide into medians, ditches or off the roadside. That’s why law enforcement officials, such as Maj. Gene Drewery of the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, are urging people to stay at home unless they absolutely have to travel, such as for work or emergencies.

He said, “The main roads are in good shape. I expect they’ll refreeze in spots. Stay off the back roads.”

Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department, stated on Thursday afternoon that the roads in the city are “Pretty good for now. Public Works has cleared the main roads well. Problems will come later when the slush freezes.”

Although Franklin Police had no reports of weather-related accidents, the sheriff’s office was kept busy because of the snowstorm on Wednesday night that went well into Thursday morning.

From as early as 19 minutes after midnight through 10:44 a.m. on Thursday, the department got 17 calls of motor vehicle accidents without injuries in the following locations:
