No roads in Isle of Wight County, the city of Franklin or Southampton County have been closed due to snow or ice.
Nina Napolitano, senior communications specialist for the Virginia Department of Transportation, confirmed around 3 p.m. Thursday that all primary roads in the city and the two counties were passable. The majority of secondary roads in each locality, however, had been designated either “moderate” or “severe” hazards, she warned.
“The way we rate a road is from ‘clear’ to ‘moderate’ to ‘severe,’” Napolitano said. “’Moderate’ means significant hazards of snow or ice but you can still get by with caution. Severe… you might get past but we don’t recommend it.”
As of 3:25 p.m. Thursday, VDOT’s traffic alert website, 511Virginia.org, showed Routes U.S. 258 and Business 58 (Carrsville Highway) in Isle of Wight County and U.S. 58 in Southampton County as “moderate.” Plank Road coming from Courtland was listed as “severe” at the border between Southampton and Sussex Counties.
