School board salutes athletics, band

COURTLAND
The Southampton County School Board lauded athletics and music makers during the meeting on Monday night. Before certificates of appreciation were presented, Supt. Dr. Gwendolyn Shannon congratulated the students and coaches, as well as thanking the parents for their support.

In his press release to the board, Athletic Coach Tim Mason wrote, “Southampton High School is extremely proud of our fall athletic programs and their many accomplishments in the Tri Rivers District, Region 3A East, and State. We are especially proud that we had three District Championships; one Regional Championship; one District and Regional Player of the Year; two District Coaches of the Year; one Regional Coach of the Year; and three students recognized at the State level.”

Cross Country

Under the leadership of Coach Scott Edwards and Assistant Coach Chris Novakoski, both the girls and boys teams were strong contenders in District, Regional, and State competitions winning the following team honors:

Boys Cross Country Team – Tri Rivers District Champions 4 Years

Girls Cross Country Team -Tri Rivers District Runner-ups.

The following earned individual Cross Country awards:

• Brianna Whitmore – All Tri Rivers District Runner State Qualifier

• Noah South – All Tri River District Runner State Qualifier

• Cole Cobb – All Tri Rivers District Runner

• Trevor Cook – All Tri Rivers District Runner

• Luke Foreman – All Tri Rivers District Runner

• Dale Vick – All Tri Rivers District Runner

Golf

Southampton High School was a strong competitor in the Tri Rivers District and beyond. Under the coaching of William Whitehurst, the SHS Golf Team achieved District Runner-Up status for the season. The following golfer led SHS and received an individual award:

• Bryce Simms – 1st Team All Tri Rivers District

Football

Under the leadership of Head Coach Littleton Parker, the SHS Football Team had an exciting season in Tri Rivers District and Region 3A East Competition winning the following team honors:

• Tri Rivers District Championship

• Tri Rivers District Coach of the Year – Littleton Parker

In addition to team honors, the following football players earned District and Regional awards for their athletic abilities:

• Tayriel Ruffin – 1st Team All Tri Rivers District – Running Back; 1st Team All Region 3A East – Running Back; Tri Rivers District Offensive Player of the Year

Volleyball

Under the leadership of Head Coach Amy Davis and Assistant Coach Jack Scholow, the Southampton

High School Volleyball Team had an amazing year winning the following team honors:

• Tri Rivers District Championship

• Tri Rivers District Tournament Championship

• Region 3A East Championship

• VHSL State Semi Finalist

• Tri Rivers District Coach of the Year – Amy Davis

• Region 3A East Coach of the Year – Amy Davis

The following Varsity Volleyball players went on to earn individual awards:

• Emma Drake – Tri Rivers District Player of the Year; Region 3A East Player of the Year; 1st Team All Tri Rivers District; 1st Team All Region 3A East

• Ashlyn Edwards – 1st Team All Tri Rivers District; 1st Team All Region 3A East

• Madeline Burgess – 2nd Team All Tri Rivers District

• Jamey Bunn – 2nd Team All Tri Rivers District; 1st Team All Region 3A East

• Jacey Bunn – 2nd Team All Tri Rivers District “Libero”; 2nd Team All Region 3A East “Libero”

• Hannah Bradshaw – 2nd Team All Tri Rivers District; 2nd Team All Region 3A East

• Madison Wright – 1st Team All Tri Rivers District; 1st Team All Region 3A East

“The dedication and expertise shown by our students and their coaches is to be commended,” stated Mason. “We are extremely proud of all involved.”

Band

Allene Atkinson, principal of Southampton High School, wrote, “Southampton High School is extremely proud of our March Band Program and their many accomplishments this fall. In addition to their spectacular performances at football games, the Southampton High Marching Band has won 25 awards at four District and Regional Band Competitions.”

The band is led by Director Xavier Fain and Assistant Director Alvin Moore. They are assisted by: Jaronda Baxter Flag Team/Dance Team Co-Sponsor; Natasha Rose Flag Team/Dance team Co-Sponsor; and Keisha Woodley Percussion Sponsor

With Fain’s leadership, the following students serve as section leaders: Drug majors Anazia Mabry, Andrea Barnes and Destiny Whitney; Kaitlyn Whitehead, Damari Mack, James Long, Caitlyn Edwards, Jeffrey Lee, Dacia Smith, Nicole Freeman, Brittany Prince, Niara Ford, Kendra Zollicoffer, Shikerra Hedgepeth, Emeralld Contee and Alexis Olds

• At the Single A Division Greensville Competition, SHS won the following awards: 1st Place Dancers; 1st Place Majorettes; 1st Place Percussion; and 2nd Place Music

• At the Triple A Division Nansemond River Competition, the following awards were won:

1st Place Majorettes; 2nd Place Dancers; 2nd Place Marching; 2nd Place Flags; 2nd Place Hornline; 2nd Place Band; 2nd Place Percussion; 2nd Place Drum Majors

• At the Double A Wonder City Classic, the Band won the following awards: 2nd Place Percussion; 2nd Place Dancers; and 2nd Place Majorettes

• At the Double A Division King’s Fork Competition, the following were won:

1st Place Percussion; 1st Place Majorettes; 2nd Place Music; 2nd Place Dancers; 2nd Place Band; 2nd Place Marching and Maneuvering; 3rd Place Drum Majors; and 3rd Place Flags
