SEDLEY — Roland Winfield Chapman, 58 — beloved husband, father, and friend — passed away peacefully on Dec. 3, 2017, with Christmas carolers at his bedroom door in Courtland Rehabilitation Center, and his devoted wife at his bedside. Roland is at rest in the arms of our Lord after a long and hard-fought battle with dementia.

Roland W. Chapman

A native of Smithfield, he was a son of the late Leon Frederick Chapman Jr. and Virginia Hill Chapman. Roland was a 1977 graduate of Isle of Wight Academy and a 1982 graduate of Virginia Tech. He worked in agricultural sales and was a member of Millfield Baptist Church. Roland was a lover of nature and farming, and enjoyed spending time in the woods as well as the fields searching for arrowheads.
He spent many years volunteering his time serving Southampton Academy athletics, and assisting with many field and facility improvements. As a result, the school recognized his efforts with the creation of “The Chapman Award” for excellence in volunteerism.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 35 years, Amy Doyle Chapman; son, Jason W. Chapman and his wife, Rachel, of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter, Emily C. Matous and her husband, Justin, of Midlothian; three grandchildren, Jackson and Reid Matous and Luke Chapman; two brothers, Leon F. “Freddie” Chapman III and Jeffrey Y. Chapman and his wife, Suzanne, all of Smithfield; mother-in-law, Carole M. Doyle of Martinsville, Virginia; sister-in-law, Kelly Goodman and her husband, Bo, of Chesapeake; brother-in-law, Scott Doyle and his wife, Lee, of Summerfield, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Jimmy Doyle.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Millfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Brooks Gale officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to the service, and suggests that memorial donations may be made to Millfield Baptist Church, 31389 Millfield Road, Wakefield, VA 23888.
