Election Day is one of the strongest proofs that the services provided by our men and women in the military are very much worthy of recognition.

Since our country secured its independence in the Colonial Era, we the people have been free to vote for individuals we think — and hope — are worthy as leaders. The election that took place just this past week is a prime example.

Where applicable, voters chose to re-elect Del. Roslyn Tyler (D-75) to continue her work for the people.

Further, Emily Brewer will be the new delegate for the 64th district in the Virginia General Assembly, and all who voted for her undoubtedly feel confident that she’ll prove to be worthy. We also acknowledge challenger Rebecca Colaw, whose part in the race served to give voters a choice. Again, that’s another right Americans enjoy, thanks to veterans who protect our country at every hour of every day of every year.

Residents in Southampton County and Franklin — not our leaders — got to decide whether or not to authorize the building of a new courthouse.

Schools are to be commended for creating programs that honor students’ parents who are veterans. That instills a proper sense of gratitude and patriotism. The mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts and grandparents who have served and those who continue to do so are worthy of recognition. Their service also enables the children to learn freely and without fear someone will take away their opportunities to learn.

This newspaper also owes the proverbial debt of gratitude that can never be repaid to veterans. They keep safe the right of freedom of the press. There are far too many countries where people are not allowed to read, hear or learn of events and different viewpoints.

All of Western Tidewater and the rest of the nation are truly blessed by the people who defend us through the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy.
