MURFREESBORO, N.C.
Chowan University’s Board of Trustees named recently retired professor of education Dr. Carolyn Modlin professor emeritus during their September board meeting upon recommendation by the board’s Academic Affairs Committee. She is a native of Southampton County and serves on both the Boykins Town Council and the Southampton County School Board.

Dr. Modlin joined the faculty at Chowan in 2001 after a lengthy career in the public school system. She served the university for 15 years prior to announcing her retirement last year. During her final semester teaching, the university awarded her the Faculty Excellence in Community Service Award for her service on town council, the school board and as a volunteer at Boykins United Methodist Church and Southampton County’s elementary schools.

Dr. Modlin has been a part of the Chowan community for most of her life, having visited the campus often as a child. She always dreamed of returning as a teacher.

She received her bachelor of science degree in home economics from Radford College, her master of science degree in diagnostic and remedial reading from Virginia State University and her education specialist in educational administration and doctor of education degrees from Virginia Tech. She taught multiple courses in the education field at Chowan, to include Introduction to Teaching, Introduction to Special Education, Analysis of Research in Teaching, Educational Psychology, Learning Disabilities, Children’s Literature, Teaching Teading in the Elementary School and Reading Practicum.

“Dr. Modlin’s commitment to the university was not without sacrifice,” said Amanda Bradshaw Sharpe of University Relations. “It imposed obligations on her, which limited her choices and created inconveniences. However, her loyalty never wavered and she has contributed a great deal to make Chowan University what it is today. All the while, she demonstrated love and passion for this great university and its students.”

Dr. Modlin, though retired, still teaches at Chowan as an adjunct professor. She is up for reappointment to the Southampton County School Board in June and hopes to be reappointed to represent the Boykins District for another four-year term.

“Staying busy and involved is important to me,” she said. “Being retired allows me to attend and participate in meetings and causes that I believe are important. I hope to continue to serve the citizens of Southampton County, especially those of Boykins, for many years to come.
