Resident urges others to vote no on referendum

To the Editor:

Attention, all taxpayers in Southampton County: DO NOT be swayed by what you read in the newspapers or hear on the radio, or any other publicity, talking about moving the courthouse from Courtland and building a new courthouse elsewhere.

Yes, a committee was formed to analyze various options, and is currently looking at a location on Camp Parkway. The reason I am saying not to be swayed is because all of these discussions and recommendations will not make this move happen. What will make this happen is if the VOTERS of Southampton County vote to approve the recommendation on Nov. 7. Only the VOTERS can decide and you must VOTE NO!

The courthouse belongs in Courtland, where it has been since the early 1800s. It is part of our history. Why do we need an extremely expensive taxpayers’ money new modern building for a handful of judges? How can we afford the corresponding tax increase associated with this new building when we have already been overburdened with taxes? The judges can probably afford this, but not the everyday resident of Southampton County! And if our county supervisors are supporting this and you disagree, then vote them OUT! They are not representing the views of their constituents!

The municipal elections are not typically well attended, but this is a very important election. Add it to your calendar, tell your friends and neighbors, and drive the elderly there to vote! If history means anything to you and if your wallet is important, PLEASE VOTE NO on Nov. 7.
