FRANKLIN — Mary “Betty” Newsome Smith was born on Oct. 10, 1927, and died on Oct. 10, 2017, her 90th birthday.
Betty was born in Emporia, Virginia, the daughter of Edward G. and Maude D. Newsome. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William Jackson “Jack” Smith Jr.; seven brothers and sisters; and a son-in-law, Mike Moore.
Her job as a registered nurse shaped every aspect of her life. As the director of nursing service at Southampton Memorial Hospital (1961-1987) and vice president of that hospital, Betty touched the lives of many of her employees, doctors and patients. She was truly a one-of-a-kind boss; Betty will be remembered for her fairness and her stern, yet kind demeanor.
She is survived by her children, Vickie Moore of Point Harbor, North Carolina; Billy (Terry) Smith of Franklin, Virginia; and Carolyn (George) Lane of Mechanicsville, Virginia; her sister, Martha Duke Jackson of Warsaw; as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Betty was an example of grace and fortitude for her family and will be profoundly missed.
A sincere thank you to her caregivers and friends at the Village of Woods Edge, Asa’s Neighborhood. You greatly enriched her quality of life in her later years.
Her memorial service will be on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m., in High Street United Methodist Church, Franklin, with Nathan Decker, pastor. The reception will follow at the home of her son and daughter-in-law at 31042 Cardinal Ave., Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Relay For Life, Franklin, or the Southeastern Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
