Suspects arrested, charged with double homicide in Rushmere

Two Rushmere men have been arrested and charged with the slaying of Nancy Starnes, 80, and her son, Kenneth Starnes, 58. Isle of Wight County Sheriff Mark Marshall made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. The capture is the result of an extensive investigation by the office. Arrested and charged are Kareem Jamar Mitchell, 29, and Richard Alexander Holmes, 19, both of Stonehouse Lane in the Rushmere area.

Their charges are as follows:

Holmes

• Two counts each of murder

• Two counts each of use of a firearm while committing murder

• Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

• Burglary of a dwelling, in the nighttime with intent to commit murder

• Grand larceny

On Saturday at approximately 11:15 a.m., deputies were called to the 4000 block of Ennisdale Drive for a residential burglary.

Upon arrival, two people were found dead. Investigators from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Medical Examiner’s office began investigating this as a home invasion and double homicide.

In addition, the sheriff’s department started looking for two vehicles that were missing from the residence.
