COURTLAND
The Lady Indians defeated Sussex on Sept. 14 in straight sets. Set scores were 25-2, 25-7 and 25-8. Standouts from the game include Emma McClelland and Ashlyn Edwards, who both had 3 kills for the night, and Kinna Magette had 9 assists and 4 aces.

Both JV and Varsity traveled to Virginia Beach on Saturday to play in the Endless Summer High School Tournament, and each went 3-2. JV finished first in the silver bracket and Varsity finished first in the Bronze bracket for their respected divisions.

JV defeated Cosby, Western Branch and Deep Creek, and falling to tough Jamestown and Blacksburg teams. Varsity defeated Gloucester, Nandua and Stafford, and falling just short to tough competition Warwick and Mathews.

Emma Drake, who had 54 kills for the day, was named to the All Tournament team. She was one of six players selected from the 16 team division. I asked Emma what was her reaction to being chosen to the all tournament team and her response was what makes her such a great teammate. She said, “I couldn’t be more impressed with how we played on Saturday. We didn’t get the start we wanted but we definitely finished how we wanted to. By working as a team we were able to accomplish that. Looking forward for what’s in store in the future!”

She truly embodies the team spirit and plays by the motto “Win as a team, lose as a team.”

Both JV and Varsity defeated Franklin on Tuesday night in straight sets. JV Varsity’s set scores were 25-7 all three sets.

I asked Maddie Simmons her thoughts about the game and she said, “We were all working together like we always do, running plays and staying focused. As the season goes on, I believe we will become even stronger as a team and have fun!”

Maddie served an impressive 18 straight points to in the second set, 8 of those serves were aces.

Senior Emma Drake had 12 kills, 8 blocks, and 5 aces. Senior Ashlyn Edwards had 5 kills, 6 aces and 14 assists. Ashlyn had this to say about Tuesday’s match, “Everyone played so well tonight and worked hard to be prepared for the next game.”

Both teams traveled to Surry on Thursday [results were not available at presstime.] The varsity team returns home next Tuesday against the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.

Varsity has a record of 10-2, and remains undefeated in district and region play.
