For the past five to six years, James Bowen of Franklin has been shouldering the duty he took on to carry a wooden cross around the city. Doing so is his way of reminding fellow Christians about their faith and its origins.

“I feel the Lord has called me to do so,” said Bowen.

But now in his mid-60s, he’s also feeling the need for some help. Specifically, Bowen would like to get other people to either assist him or even take the cross up themselves and move it here and there to inspire people.

“As a body of believers we should do more than talk about our faith. It’s every believer’s responsibility to get the Word out,” he said.

This is the same cross that Bowen had set up near a service station on Armory Drive. But a complaint compelled the business to ask him to take the crucifix elsewhere. He complied and now has it situated on South Street.

Bowen acknowledged that from time to time he’s gotten some odd comments about his cross. One person said they could not help because of their Muslim background. Another person asked Bowen if he was a member of the KKK.

In spite of such remarks, he’s undaunted in his desire to testify however he can.
