You make the choice on referendum

After months of detailed research, strenuous discussion and debate, the Courthouse Committee decided earlier this month to recommend that if a new courthouse is to be built in Southampton County, the site would be on Camp Parkway.

The alternative was closer to town on Jerusalem Road. Alas, a new offer that could have made the site more appealing reportedly came too late.

With this information in hand, the majority of Supervisors agreed during its Monday meeting that what will be on the referendum this Election Day is:

“Should the courthouse be removed to 30100 Camp Parkway and shall the Board of Supervisors be permitted to spend $26.5 million therefore?”

Your choice will be simple: Yes or No.

Certainly we will not tell you how you should vote. Nor do we recommend you pursue asking the supervisors on how they think you should choose.

Instead, seek out the proponents and opponents of building a new courthouse and weigh their points against one another.

Then come Nov. 7, you can make an informed decision that will make a difference.
