Portsmouth man arrested for attempted armed robbery

Southampton County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a suspect in connection with the attempted armed robbery of a Sunoco gas station, located in the 28000 block of Southampton Parkway.

According to Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the incident on Saturday a approximately 6:32 p.m. Cpl. E.L. Parson, while responding to the call, observed an individual matching the description of the suspect and stopped him.

Parsons identified the individual as Derick Brashears, 22, of Portsmouth, and discovered a shirt, which the victim had described as being used as a mask, and a large bowie-style knife, in Brashear’s possession.

Brashears then admitted to Parsons that he had gone to the Sunoco to commit a robbery. He was arrested for robbery, wearing a mask in public and carrying a concealed weapon.

He is now in the Southampton County Jail with no bond. His arraignment has been set for Tuesday, July 25, at 1 p.m.
