Units from the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, the Newsoms and Hunterdale Volunteer Fire Departments, and Franklin Fire and Rescue responded to the report of a two-vehicle accident in the 28000 block of General Thomas Highway at approximately 8 a.m. on Thursday. This information comes from EMS Lt. Clayton Gaskins of the Newsoms VFD.

Responders arrived on scene to find an overturned tractor trailer, fully loaded with wood chips, off the road. The second vehicle, a large four-door SUV, was also off the road. One person sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

As of 10:45 a.m. Thursday, General Thomas Highway was still closed in both directions between Handsom Road and Shady Brook Trail. By 11:45 a.m., all fire and rescue trucks had cleared the scene and a Southampton Towing truck had successfully uprighted the tractor trailer. The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced that the road will remain closed until approximately 1 p.m. for additional cleanup, and has set up detours on Routes 35 and 58.

More information will be provided as additional details are released.
