This past weekend, the Southampton-Sussex all-star softball teams played in the 2017 Girl’s Fast Pitch PONY East Zone South Atlantic League Recreational Fast Pitch Regional Tournament, hosted by the Southern Chesapeake Athletic Association. Both the 14u and 12u teams took first place in their age brackets, and the 10u team made a strong showing, winning a game in pool play Saturday and a first round game in seeded play on Sunday.
10u opened their tournament play on Saturday by defeating Deep Creek by a score of 15-0, followed up by a tough 7-5 loss to Southern Chesapeake. They finished play on Saturday with a 17-9 loss against Smithfield. On Sunday, the girls started off with another win over Deep Creek, 14-4, but were knocked out of the tournament by virtue of a 13-5 loss against Southern Chesapeake.
12u started play on Saturday with two strong performances, a 12-0 victory over Southern Chesapeake and a 16-3 win over Aberdeen, before losing their third game to Coastal Storm Black 4-3. The team bounced back on Sunday, defeating Deep Creek by the score of 10-0 and earning a rematch with Coastal Storm. The S-S all stars put the previous day’s defeat behind them, and won the big trophy with an 8-2 win over CSB.
The 14u team took a rollercoaster ride to their tournament championship. On Saturday, the squad defeated Deep Creek before losing to Coastal Storm Black. Sunday’s double-elimination round started with another win over Deep Creek, but required three straight games against Coastal Storm to determine the champion. By winning the first game against Coastal Storm, S-S was only one win away from claiming the title. But they stumbled in the second game, causing a winner-take-all third and final showdown, ultimately won by S-S. The tournament MVP’s for S-S were Whitlee Hughes, Covonna Bynum and Gracen Ogburn.
Congratulations to all three teams for such a strong performance.
