FRANKLIN — Robert Edward Lyons Sr., 81, of Cherokee Drive Franklin, successfully finished the “Good Fight of Faith” in the early morning hours of Monday, June 26, 2017, at his residence.
“Ed” as he was affectionately called, was born in Warrenton, North Carolina, on Nov. 23, 1935, to the late Will Lyons and Mattie Lyons Baskette. He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Mary Lyons McAllister.
His early childhood educational training was in North Carolina. He started his young adult life in Newsoms, Virginia, over 60 years ago with the assistance of a devoted uncle and aunt, Lloyd and Margaret Whitehead.
He had always been focused, strong-willed and strong-minded with a keen sense of direction which helped his nine children as they navigated the pathway of young adult life. “We fall down, but we get up.”
Robert retired from what is now Northrop Grumman with over 20 years of service. He was a people person and loved to be innovative. Robert always found a way to “make it happen.” He was also an entrepreneur and businessman in his own right. Robert managed his own van transportation to the shipyard for many years. “May the work I’ve done speak for me.”
He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Lessie Mae Flythe Lyons for over 60 years; his children: the Rev. Edna Rooks (Matthew), Ollie Lyons, Roberta Felton (Eddie), Helena Person ( Reggie), Verylessie Little, the Rev. Robert Lyons Jr. (Dorinda), the Rev. Johnny Lyons (Melissa) and the Rev. Samuel Lyons (Robin).
He also leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Leroy Lyons and Charles Lyons; three sisters, Mary Maynard, Jeaneatta Lyons and Beatrice Hines; two special aunts, Helena and Roberta Williams; 2 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and associates.
The celebration of his life will be on Saturday, July 1, at 2 p.m., in the Move of God Church, 221 S. Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Johnny Lyons delivering the eulogy; Apostle Tyrone Hart is the host pastor. Robert will be placed in the church for viewing by noon.
The committal and benediction will be held at Care Memorial Gardens, 21451 N. Main St., Courtland, Virginia, after which the family will refresh friends at 31203 Cherokee Drive, Franklin.
A traditional service with dignity and respect will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Inc., 224 S. Main St. Franklin.
