FRANKLIN
Another school year has ended, but it is never too late to think ahead when it comes to preparing for scholarship and college applications. To be competitive today, high school students need more than a good G.P.A. – they also need volunteer hours and a record of community service.

To help students gain those volunteer opportunities, the Franklin-Southampton Area United Way has partnered with Paul D. Camp Community College to host a United for Impact volunteer camp this summer for students in grades 8-12. The course will be part of the Kids College program held at the Workforce Development Center.

United for Impact is a four-day program designed to help students enhance their leadership abilities, build teamwork skills, and meet like-minded peers while creating positive change in their community. Students will learn the importance of community service and volunteerism through hands-on experience while working on service projects at local nonprofit agencies.

United Way Executive Director Trish Tsitsera said that “participants will experience a team-based environment and gain a valuable combination of knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.”

At the end of each session, each teen will earn a Community Service Certificate, letters of recommendation and a list of available opportunities to continue serving as a catalyst for positive change in our community.

A class fee of $30 per student covers the cost of a tee shirt and supplies for the service projects, which will include a combination of on-site and off-site experiences. Transportation is provided by the college.

Two sessions are available: June 26-29 and July 31-Aug. 3. The sessions will feature different volunteer projects, so students may opt to do both weeks if space is available.
