The driver, who the Sheriff’s Office has identified as Alton Worley, 42, of Skeetertown Road, Suffolk, has been charged with felony hit-and-run, reckless driving, felony eluding and driving under the influence — third offense.

According to Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office received a report around 7:15 p.m. of a red Corvette driving recklessly westbound near Armory Drive on Southampton Parkway. A Courtland Police Department unit observed the Corvette near the Story Station Road area and, when the unit got behind the vehicle, the Corvette started making evasive maneuvers, speeding up and changing lanes.

A Southampton Sheriff’s unit joined the Courtland PD unit at Old Bridge Road, at which point the Corvette turned off Southampton Parkway south on Old Bridge into a mobile home community, and then headed back onto Southampton Parkway traveling east.

Deputies say the Corvette exceeded speeds of 100 miles per hour while eluding the pursuing officers and struck another vehicle at the intersection of South Quay Road and O’Kelley Drive in Suffolk.

Suffolk Police Department officers investigated the collision and arranged for one person to be transported to the hospital from that incident.

The driver, Worley, then allegedly jumped from the vehicle near the overpass of Dutch Road and led Southampton deputies on a foot pursuit before being apprehended. He is now in the Southampton County Jail with no bond, and will go for arraignment on April 14.
