FRANKLIN — Deacon Newsom B. Chavis Jr. of Rosewood Avenue transitioned to his eternal rest and peace on March 22, 2017, in Richmond, Virginia.

On Jan. 12, 1928, he was born in Adams Grove, Virginia, to the late Newsom B. and Sadie Sykes Chavis.
“Pete” as he was affectionately called, graduated from Southampton High School. He courageously served in the Army, where he received an honorable discharge in 1949.
He was employed with A&R Construction Company where he retired after 40 years of service as a construction manager.
“Pete” was a member of New Life Church where he served as a deacon.
On Sept. 17, 1950, he married the love of his life, Erdie Everett. They shared 62 years of marriage and he remained devoted to Erdie until she transitioned to her heavenly home on July 9, 2012.
He is survived by his sons, Pete Chavis III (Angela) of Quinton, Virginia; Ray Chavis (Jeannetta) of Moseley, Virginia; Tracy Chavis (Alyx) of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many other relatives.
On the day of his service, Mr. Chavis will rest in church for viewing by 11 a.m. His life will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 28, at 1 p.m. in East End Church of God, 410 East St., Franklin, with Bishop Sherry Hall delivering the message of comfort; Bishop S.D. Willis is host pastor. The committal and benediction will be in Southview Cemetery.
A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St.
