Elmo M. Fowler

COURTLAND — Elmo Morris Fowler, 87, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday March 14, 2017.

He was born in Isle of Wight County to the late William H. and Rebie Holland Fowler.

Elmo graduated from Carrsville High School. Anxious to serve his country, he joined the Army and served two years. Pvt. Fowler was a member of the 11th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, Saltzburg, Austria. He was appointed a member of the Royal Order of Voyagers on the Naval Ship Gen. H.F. Hodges T-AP144 at the Port of Leghorn, Italy.

He was a member of Vincent’s Grove United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and a choir member. Elmo retired from farming and VDOT.

Elmo loved working in his yard and cutting his grass twice a week with his riding mower. He took great pride in his vegetable garden and sharing with his friends and family especially his prize butter beans.

Elmo was a friend to everyone and never met a stranger. His wit, funny little jokes and his million dollar smile will be an everlasting memory.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Marie F. Fowler; his precious daughter, Cindy Parker and son-in-law, Murray, of Nags Head, North Carolina. He is also survived by his brother, Gene of Courtland; and predeceased by his brothers, Oscar and Bud.

The memorial service will be in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 19. A visitation will be held one hour before the service. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.

The family wishes to thank New Century Hospice and Comfort Keepers for their loving care of Elmo and their many kindnesses and many thanks to Senior Services and the Alzheimer’s Association.
