Isle of Wight County Schools will further discuss its budget during a work session on Thursday, March 2, at 9 a.m. and will participate in a joint meeting with the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors later that evening.
The work session will be held in the conference room at the IWCS school board office, located behind Westside Elementary School at 820 W. Main St., Smithfield. The joint meeting with the Board of Supervisors will be held in the board room of the Isle of Wight County Courthouse complex at 6 p.m.
According to Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson, the meeting will not include a public hearing on Superintendent Dr. Jim Thornton’s request that the county take on $10 million in debt service to fund renovations at Smithfield and Windsor high schools, though the proposal will likely be the main topic of discussion.
State law requires the Board of Supervisors to hold a public hearing before taking on any new debt. Robertson said that as of now, no date has been set for such a hearing. He added that the earliest the board would likely schedule such a hearing would be at its next regular scheduled meeting on Thursday, March 16.
