Buck J. Hicks

COURTLAND — Buck Jones Hicks, 84, passed away on Feb. 16, 2017, in the East Pavilion surrounded by his family. He was born in Oxford, North Carolina, the son of the late William Alvin Hicks and Mabel Jones Hicks. Buck was also predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Lanhan Hicks, and a sister, Janet H. Barlow.

Buck was retired from the United States Air Force after 25 years of service, and had retired from Union Camp Corporation as an accountant after 14 years of service.

He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the school’s first Air Force ROTC program. Buck also received his Master’s degree from American University.

He was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church and a former member of Hunterdale Christian Church, where he had been the church treasurer for 25 years.

Buck was a member of the Hunterdale Ruritan Club, and a former teacher at Paul D. Camp Community College.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Baker Hicks; three daughters, Mary Hicks Johnson of Petersburg, Janet Hicks Goode of Franklin and Carol Hicks Griffin (Gerald) of Newsoms; six grandchildren, Lauren E. Goode, Virginia L. Goode, Robert S. Goode, Jason Geuea, Richard and Grace Goode; Jackie’s children, Tim Baker (Vicki) of Boykins; Betty Whitehurst (Bill) of Franklin; Neil Baker (Lea Ann) of Zuni; and her four grandchildren, Ben Lane, Sarah Whitehurst, Graysen Baker and Stone Baker.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. and the Rev. Lafayette T. Wilkins Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Poplar Spring Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
