SEVERN, N.C. — Deborah Ross Hawks, 62, passed away on Feb. 6, 2017, in her home after a four-year battle with ALS. She was born in Evergreen, Alabama, and grew up in Courtland.

She was a graduate of Southampton High School and was a member of Severn Baptist Church.

She was a Quality Control Technician at John B. Sanfilippo and Sons in Garysburg, North Carolina.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Jessica M. Newsome (Adam) of Severn, North Carolina, and Lacey N. Maddrey (Henning Snell) of Washington, D.C.; a son, Shawn Maddrey, and her mother, Shirley S. Ross, both of Courtland; a brother, Mike Ross of Emporia, a sister-in-law, Kathy Ross of Windsor; six grandchildren, Addison Newsome, Jackson Newsome, Gavin Edwards, Carlee Edwards, Riley Maddrey and Addison Maddrey; two nieces, Ashley and Jamie Ross; and a nephew, Wesley Ross.

She was predeceased by her father, Guy Wesley Ross, and a brother, Joey Dean Ross.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Mark Corbett and Dale Miller officiating. The burial will follow at Southampton Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and suggests that memorial donations be made to The ALS Association, Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, 4 N. Blount St., Suite 200, Raleigh, NC 27601.
