Big third quarter play pushes Raiders over Vikings, 73-58

A big third quarter with three Raiders connecting on 3-point baskets was the turning point in a tight game that gave the home team the edge to take a 73-58 win over the Brunswick Academy Vikings in a basketball game played at Southampton Academy on Friday.

The Raiders entered the third quarter down 23-26 in a game that the score had flip-flopped a few times. With 4:50 remaining in the quarter, the Vikings were last up 32-29 before three Raiders started a series of connecting on 3-point baskets.

Raiders scoring 3-point baskets were Caleb Kidd with two and Alexander Lanevskyi and Brooks Holland both scoring one apiece. When this bombardment of scoring ended, the home team was up 49-40 as the time went under one minute to play. The Vikings attempting to answer back scored one 3-point basket as the quarter ended with the Raiders up 50-43. All total, the Raiders outscored the Vikings 27-17 in the third quarter.

Earlier in the game, the Raiders were up easily 21-12 at the end of the first quarter, but in the second quarter only scored two points. The Vikings pumped in 14 to allow them to hold the lead at the half, 26-23.

In the fourth quarter the home team easily held the lead to fight back any comeback by the Vikings.

“I think that we played well in the second half,” Raiders head coach Chris Pope said after the game.

“The first half we were in major foul trouble and I took some of our playmakers off the court for an extended period of time. Our subs came in and played a good game. We had a good night rebounding 36 to 20. We were in foul shooting 25 for 28 and we needed every one of them, and I think that overall we played with good intensity and had good defense.”

For the Raiders, three players were in double figures: They were led by Caleb Kidd with 25 points, followed by Brooks Holland and Alexander Lanevskyi. both with 13 points apiece.

For the Vikings, three players were in double figures” They were Jordan Cox with 25 points, Jared Utley 16 points and Berklee Pair with 11 points.
