Rape suspect now in custody

The suspect wanted by the Franklin Police Department in connection with a rape reported on Tuesday has turned himself in.

According to Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department, Antowan Franklin, 26, of the 500 block of West Second Avenue, has been charged with rape, forcible sodomy, abduction and entering a dwelling with the intent to commit murder, rape, robbery or arson. He will be remanded to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

Franklin police obtained a warrant for his arrest following their investigation of a rape reported to them at 7:37 a.m. on Tuesday. A 26-year-old female told police that a male suspect, who police later identified as Franklin, broke into her residence and sexually assaulted her at knife point.

After the assault, the suspect fled the house. The victim was treated and released from Southampton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
