CAPRON — Mrs. Ruth “Baby Ruth” Brown of Angelico Road departed this life to claim her eternal rest and peace on Jan. 12, 2017.
She was born in Southampton County on Sept. 3, 1929 to the late Jim and Rena Grant Hicks.
Mrs. Brown was a member of Pine Level Baptist Church, where she served on the Hospitality Committee and the Missionary Ministry.
For 35 years, she was employed in New York in the garment industry as a seamstress. “Baby Ruth” as she was lovingly called, retired in 1981.
Upon retirement, she relocated to Southampton County. “Baby Ruth” regularly attended the Senior Citizens group on Oak Street in Franklin.
Besides her parents, “Baby Ruth” was preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Big Jim” Brown.
She is survived by two sons, Chester M. Hicks of Capron and Edward O’Shea Brown (Tinisia) of Tucson, Arizona; three sisters, Gladys Whitehead of Newsoms; Margaret Jackson of Burlington, New Jersey; and Amelia Lindsay of Richmond; one brother, William “Tater” Hicks of Richmond; grandchildren, Greg, David, Jamar, Tony, Keisha and Lynn; 10 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
On the day of the service, her remains will rest in church for viewing by 11 a.m.
The homegoing service was on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m., in Pine Level Baptist Church, 23035 Church Street, Capron, with the Rev. H. Keith Rose, host pastor; Elder Catherine Hamlin, eulogist. The committal and benediction were in the church cemetery.
A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St.
