SUSSEX COUNTY
The Franklin High School varsity girls and boys teams split wins in games played at Sussex Central High School on Jan 13.

The Lady Broncos had their work set for them as the aggressive Lady Tigers pressed the Lady Broncos hard in the opening minutes of the game and easily put a 56-12 win in the score books.

For the Lady Broncos their best quarter was the first quarter as it ended with a score of 9-6 with the home team ahead. But after that, the Tigers opened up their scoring and by the end of the first half were up 38-6. For the Broncos, Kayla Powell played hard trying to beat the press to just get the ball down court on many of their possessions. Powell also was the only Bronco to score points; She led the scoring with all 12 points. For the Tigers, Chenelle Jones was the only player in double figures with 13 points.

Franklin High School girl’s varsity coach Mona Sumblin remarked after the game, “Our goal is to improve in every game both individually and as a team.”

For the boys game, the Broncos opened with a 6-0 lead and held the lead for the entire game to take a 56-48 win over the Tigers. For the Broncos, Fred Lassiter was the player to stop as he dropped in nine of his total 21 points in the first quarter. The Broncos held the lead at the end of the quarter, 16-9.

In the second quarter the home team outscored the Broncos, but they managed to still hold the lead, 30-24 at the end of the half.

The fourth quarter of play was the best of the game as the home team pushed back at the Broncos. With 6:33 on the clock, the Tigers closed the score to 42-41. With the score staying close it wasn’t until Bronco Fred Lassiter connected on a 3-point basket that put the Broncos up 49-41, which turned the tide for the game to help the Broncos to go on to take the win.

Broncos head coach Robbie Cutchins remarked after the game, “I am so proud of the guys; they are just hungry. We have had a different level of effort for the last two or three weeks. We got a huge win down in Brunswick last Wednesday. The snow set us back, but when we got back in the gym you could see a different level of kids and it showed tonight coming down here to Sussex.”

In scoring, the Broncos had two players in double figures. They were led by Fred Lassiter with 21 points and Deuntae Jefferson with 11 points.

For the Tigers, Danon Ellis was only one player in double figures with 10 points.
