FRANKLIN
Franklin’s city council will have a regular scheduled meeting on Monday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the city hall council chamber at 207 W. Second Ave., Franklin.

The meeting will include a public hearing to nominate candidates for Franklin City Public Schools’ vacant ward four and five school board seats. All nominations must be made during the public hearing, and no candidate who is not nominated during this time will be considered for the school board.

The only requirements for nominees are that they be bona fide residents of the wards for which they wish to be considered, and that they be qualified to vote and a registered voter.

A candidate can be nominated by anyone, including a candidate nominating himself or herself. The former school board representatives who recently resigned can be re-nominated to serve on the school board.

People prohibited from serving on the school board include any city officer or deputy clerk of a city officer, members of city council and immediate family members of anyone on city council.

Those appointed to the ward four and five seats will serve out the remainder of the current terms of the previous representatives. The ward four term expires June 30, 2019 and the ward five term expires June 30, 2018. Appointees may be re-appointed to serve full three-year terms at the end of their current terms.

All appointees must be sworn into office by the Southampton County clerk of court in Courtland before he or she can begin to serve on the school board.
