After finishing the Holiday Classic Runner Up to a very strong Division 3A Colonial Heights team in the NAPA Auto Parts – Bluewater Rentals Holiday Classic hosted at Franklin High School, the Broncos had one week to prepare for their date on the road with the Bulldogs of Brunswick High School.

The Bulldogs have been rolling in the 2A level this decade with three state championships and multiple appearance in the state championship game at their respective level.

After defeating the Bulldogs twice the previous season for the first time in school history, the Broncos were up for the challenge once again as the game would kick off the long stretch of games for the second half of the season to start 2017.

The Broncos knew their defense is what led to success against the Bulldogs the previous season so that was obviously the focal point yet again. The Broncos held the Bulldo

gs to nine first-quarter points and grabbed a 15-9 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter would start out much the same with the Broncos building their lead to 10 only to see Brunswick claw its way back and cut the lead to two with 2 minutes to go before the half. However, the Broncos would continue to battle and get their lead to seven at the break leading the Bulldogs 30-27.

The second half would be much of a mirror image of the first half with the Broncos sticking to their game plan, which ultimately led to the Broncos being able to build an 11-point lead in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. But yet again the Bulldogs weren’t ready to lay down, as momentum changed midway of the fourth quarter and with three minutes left to go in the game, the Bulldogs had cut what was once an 11-point lead down to one point. The crowd was behind their home Bulldogs like no other point in the game, but the Broncos stayed level and remained on course grabbing some huge rebounds inside of a minute to go, which led to the Bulldogs having to foul and the Broncos converted enough at the line to seal the deal for a 58-52 victory over the Bulldogs.

Coach Robbie Cutchins commented after the game, “I’m just so proud of these young men being able to see their growth and sticking to the game plan and learning in the fire! “
