Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation completed the replacement of the Route 621 bridge over Passenger Swamp on Thursday. The road is now reopened to traffic.
Crews demolished, removed and replaced the bridge, and rebuilt the approach roadway to tie into the new bridge. The new bridge has been elevated and is 77 feet long and 24 feet wide. There is no longer a weight limit on the new bridge.
The project began on June 28 and was completed on-budget and ahead of schedule. The bridge was originally scheduled to be complete by June 2017.
The bridge is a minor rural connector road in Isle of Wight County serving Ivor, Smithfield, Wakefield and Rushmere.
