WAVERLY — Mary Elizabeth Maifeld Jackson, 100, a lifetime resident of Waverly, Virginia, died on Friday the 16th of December in her hometown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Regina Maifeld; her husband, William L. Jackson Jr.; and children William L. Jackson III, Albert M. Jackson and Elizabeth J. Bain; and her four siblings, Harry Maifeld, Alberta Kealey, Leon Maifeld and Bernadine “Bunny” Parker.

Born on Feb. 5, 1916, Elizabeth was a 1933 graduate of Waverly High School. She returned to Waverly High School the following year, to continue her education by taking business courses.

Her early professional career began as a telephone operator. She later continued her professional career as a bookkeeper for a series of Chevrolet dealerships including Wilcox, Davis, Holland and Master Chevrolet.

In addition to working, Elizabeth was an active presence in her community. She was a member of the American Legion Post 191 Auxiliary, where she served as treasurer. She served the community as a notary public. Elizabeth was a member of Waverly Congregational Christian Church, where she also attended the Sarah Johnson class for many years.

Elizabeth was a devoted wife and mother. On Dec. 6, 1940, she married Bill on his 34th birthday. In 1942, she left her job at Wilcox to start the fulfillment of her dream of having a large family. She would return to the workforce 18 years later continuing her career as a bookkeeper.

She welcomed her first grandchild, Karen at age 50. She lovingly embraced the responsibility of parenting this child as well.

Elizabeth was well known as a strong independent woman and for speaking her mind. She enjoyed shopping trips with her friends, dancing in her younger years, and reading a good book.

She is survived by her children, Larry Jackson (Linda), Ricky Jackson (Cathy), Elaine Pearson (Eddie) and Patty Collins (George). Elizabeth’s grandchildren include Karen, Heath, Suzette, Billy, Chris, Ellen, Tammy, Bobby, Ricky, Kristi, Brittany, Robb, George Jr. and Michael. She was blessed with 20 loving great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lorraine Sheffield Friends Class at Waverly Congregational Christian Church or Waverly Rescue Squad.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. in Waverly Congregational Christian Church. The family received friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

A private interment will be held at a later time.
